The Massive Data Computing Research Centre (MDC) at the Harbin Institute of Technology is affiliated to the second degree subject on computer software and theory. The research center, which was founded and is currently lead by Prof. Jianzhong Li, CCF Fellow and principal scientist of the 973 Program of China, focuses on front-edge research on analytics of massive datasets, also known as “big data” in many other fields. The faculty of the research center is organized by 3 professors (3 doctoral supervisors), 6 associate professors (1 doctoral supervisors) and 3 lecturers. Among the faculty members, Prof. Jianzhong Li was supported by the National Outstanding Youth Science Funds; Prof. Hong Gao was honored the “New Century Talent”; Prof. Zhaonian Zou was nominated the National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award; Prof. Hongzhi Wang, Prof. Zhaonian Zou and Prof. Siyao Cheng won the CCF Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award. Until now, 32 doctors and 83 masters have graduated from the research center. There are currently 22 Ph.D. candidates and 23 master students working in the research center.

The research fields of the research center include acquisition, storage, querying and mining of massive datasets. The center opens a series of undergraduate and graduate courses such as Computing Theory, Algorithm Design and Analysis, Data Mining and Data Warehousing, Fundamentals of Compiling, Database Systems, Database System Applications, etc.

In the recent years, the center has undertaken 3 projects funded by the 973 program, 8 projects funded by the National 863 Program, 1 grant project, 2 key projects and 10 general projects funded by the Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 30 ministerial- or provincial-level projects. The center has published 5 books and more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals and refereedconferences, such as ACM Transactions on Database Systems, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, VLDB Journal, Algrithmica, SIGMOD, VLDB, KDD, INFOCOM, ICDE, etc. All the papers have been cited by others over 3000 times in total. The research center won 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 first prizes, 2 second prizes, and 1 third prize of Science and Technology Progress Award, and other more than 10 other awards.
