At the invitation of Professor Wang Yadong, dean of the School of Computer Science and Technology, and supported by the International Project Management Center of the Ministry of International Cooperation, Professor Raj Reddy, the ACM Turing Award winner visited HIT on June 1-3.

Professor Reddy, one of the early pioneers of computer science and artificial intelligence, is a tenured professor from Carnegie Mellon University who specializes in artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction. He developed the world's first continuous speech recognition system.

On June 1st, Professor Reddy came to the School of Computer Science and Technology (the School in the following sections) to have a meeting with the leaders and teachers of the School. He listened to a report on the current situation of the School's development and course teaching, and gave opinions and suggestions on teaching methods. Prof. Reddy pointed out that undergraduates' ability to do research needs to be strengthened, such as requiring students to redo the research of latest journals and conference papers according to their methods. Professor Wang Yadong and Professor Reddy reviewed the School's cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University over the years, including the HIT-CMU program and the teaching collaboration between the two universities. Professor Reddy said he was willing to communicate and coordinate for the program to promote its progress. This meeting, not only benefitted the teachers attended, but also promoted a deeper and broader cooperation between the computing disciplines of the two universities. Professor Wang Yadong, dean of the School of Computer Science and Tech, Professor Wang Zhongjie, the associate dean of the School of Computer Science and Tech , Professor Wang Hongzhi from the Massive Data Computing Research Center, and the dean assistant Zhang Yu attended the meeting.

After the meeting, Prof. Ding Xuemei, the vice president of HIT, met Professor Raj Reddy in Room 101 of the Executive Building to discuss on the high-level programs for consecutive cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence. The programs aim to promote the research on artificial intelligence of HIT to a world-class level. Bai Yang, associate director of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Ministry of International Cooperation, Professor Wang Yadong, dean of the School of Computer Science and Tech, Professor Wang Zhongjie, associate dean of the School of Computer Science and Tech, Professor Wang Hongzhi from the Massive Data Computing Research Center, and Zhang Yu, the dean assistant, were present at the meeting.

The vice president of HIT, Ms Ding Xuemei met Professor Reddy.

On the afternoon of June 2, Professor Reddy presented an report entitled Reaching the People at the Body of the Pyramid for the teachers and students at the Campus Activity Center, introducing the true meaning of AI and the great changes it has brought to human life. He also analyzed how AI can be used to benefit people, especially those in underdeveloped countries and regions, under the view of scientists' duty of human development. In his report, Professor Reddy introduced several real-world smartphone applications with dynamic real-time voice translation to help the people in less-educated areas and the changes in their lives brought by advanced technology. The report was hosted by Professor Yao Hongxun from the Intelligent Interface and Human-Computer Interaction Research Center. The teachers and students were very interested in the report and the atmosphere was warm. Students asked many questions and Professor Reddy patiently answered them one by one.

After the report, Professor Reddy had further discussion with some of the teachers and students and had dinner together. Professor Wang Hongzhi, Associate Professor Cheng Siyao, Associate Professor Liu Bo from Bioinformatics Research Center, and Associate Professor Cao Hailong from Language Technology Research Center attended the dinner. During the the dinner, Professor Reddy shared the latest research trends and achievements in the field of artificial intelligence with teachers and students. This visit greatly inspired teachers and students' interests on the artificial intelligence, and expanded their vision on the welfare that AI brings to human beings.

It was the first visit by Professor Raj Reddy, accompanied by Associate Professor Liu Ming from the Language Technology Research Center of the School of Computer Science and Tech.

In recent years, in order to strengthen international communication and cooperation, the School of Computer Science and Technology has launched the Visiting Program of International First-class Masters, and extensively invited Turing Award winners, fellows of the US Academy of Sciences / Engineering in the field of computer science, ACM and IEEE fellows to visit, aiming to enhance the international vision of teachers and students and to encourage them to track the forefront of the international research on computer science through academic reports, discussions with teachers and students, establishment of joint laboratories and so on. In addition to the Visiting Program of International First-class Masters, the School of Computer Science and Tech has also launched the Lectures Program of International First-class Scholars, the Visiting Program of International Top Academic Administrators and Chief Editors of Top Academic Journals, and the Introduction Program of International Young Scholars , etc. Those international cooperation and communication programs has accelerated the progress of constructing the world-class computing discipline.
