Overview

HIT-CST has been enjoying scientific research achievements in recent years. The school has undertaken hundreds of high-level research projects sponsored by the central government and the various bodies of the government, and has achieved significant milestones. As a result of such a constant striving, HIT-CST has gradually built up its excellent reputation in various research disciplines, such as massive data computing, bioinformatics and computational biology, network and information security, image and video processing, natural language processing, fault tolerant computing, pattern recognition, service computing and software engineering.

1.      Research Funding

In last five years, the school has either led or participated in 139 national scientific and technological projects, including National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), National High-Tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), National Science and Technology Support Plan, and National Natural Science Foundation of China. More specifically, the school has led or participated in 7 projects of the 973 Program, 42 of the 863 Program, 9 of National Science and Technology Support Plan, and 81 of National Natural Science Foundation of China. Additionally, the school has participated in 23 enterprise-funded scientific research projects and 32 international cooperation programs in collaboration with many world-renowned companies. (See Table 1 .2 and Figure 1)

Its research funding has increased steadily year after year, making it one of the top 5 computer science schools in Mainland China. In total, the research foundation reserves about 75 million RMB today (see Table 3).

The National Program on Key Basic Research Project (the 973 Program), known as the National Basic Research Program, is a basic research program initiated by the government of the People’s Republic of China in the year of 1997. Its purpose was to develop basic research, innovations and technologies aligned with national priorities in economic and social development. The program was managed by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. The Natural Science Foundation of China is also involved in coordinating the research with the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. Over the years the program has dedicated its research to the areas such as agriculture, health, information, energy, environment, resources, population and materials.

The National High-Tech R&D Program of China (the 863 Program), known as State High-Tech Development Plan, is a program funded and administered by the government of the People’s Republic of China to stimulate the development of advanced technologies in a wide range of fields for the purpose of rendering China independent of financial obligations from foreign technologies. It was established in March of 1986. After fulfilling the 7th five-year plan, the 8th, and 9th five-year plans were run with approximately 11 billion RMB of state financing and an output of around 2000 patents (national and international). Under the plan, about $200 billion was spent on information and communication technologies, of which $150 billion was earmarked for telecommunications. In 1996, the key technological field of Marine Technology was added. The initial implementation took place during the 7th five-year plan and an update has been made during the 10th five-year plan, which was run from 2001 to 2005. In 2001, under the 10th five-year plan, the program was reevaluated in consultation with foreign experts. The program initially focused on seven key technological fields: biotechnology, space, information technology, laser technology, automation, energy and new materials.

2. Publications

The faculties of HIT-CST have published over 400 papers per year from 2012 to 2016 (see Table 4).

Journal Papers

Since 2012, the total of 1000+ journal papers have been published and, among them, 600+ papers were indexed by SCI, including 20+ ESI highly cited papers in IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, International Journal of Computer Vision, Bioinformatics, Pattern Recognition, BMC Bioinformatics, Nucleic Acids Research, PLoS One. Parts of journal papers are listed in Table 5.And the ESI highly cited papers are listed in Table 6.
