      Founded in 2003, the Research Center of Language Technology hosts the MOE-MS Joint Key Lab of NLP and Speech (together with researchers from other centers). It consists of four research laboratories: Machine Intelligence and Translation (MI&T) Lab, Intelligent Technology and Natural Language Processing (ITNLP) Lab, Web Intelligence (WI) Lab and Social Network Lab.

      Machine Intelligence and Translation Lab has been pursuing NLP research ever since it was started in 1985. It completed the first Chinese-English machine translation system that passed the formal technical appraisal in 1989, which was awarded the second prize of Science and Technology Progress of Ministry level. In June 2000, it established the HIT-Microsoft Joint Lab of Machine Translation, which developed into the MOE-MS Joint Key Lab NLP&Speech in 2004. Directed by Prof Li Sheng and Prof. Zhao Tiejun, the lab currently consists of 7 staffs, 10 Ph. D. candidates and 20 graduate students, The main research interests of the lab include natural language processing (including lexical, syntactic, semantic and discourse analysis), machine translation and multi-lingual information processing, personalized information retrieval, domain-specific information processing, sentiment analysis etc.. In recent years, the lab has completed more than 10 projects granted by Natural Science Foundation of China (Key projects and general projects), National 863 Program (Key projects), and other provincial and ministerial level programs, reslting 2 ministry level Science and Technology Progress awards. Its past-five-year publications comprises more than 100 papers in the prestigious conferences and journals (e.g. ACL, Coling, EMNLP, TALIP etc.), as well as one translated book. Specifically, the lab is now involved in semantic analysis of language based on big data, covering language modeling via deep learning, lexical semantic computing, semantic role labeling, information extraction for logic reasoning and so on.

    Intelligent Technology & Natural Language Processing Lab consists of 30 members, including 1 professor, 4 associate professors, 2 lecturers, 7 Ph.D. students and 16 master degree students. ITNLP laboratory works in natural language processing and related areas, including interactive Q&A system, answer fusion, sentiment analysis, semantic computing, large-scale text clustering, computational advertising, recommendation system, social network analysis, information extraction and mining, computational molecular biology, deep learning, knowledge map construction and application etc. The sentence-level Chinese characters intelligent input method had won the prizes of provincial and ministerial level 1 or 2, and get multiple national invention patents. The laboratory authorized Microsoft corporation to use this technology, and provide the core technology for the Microsoft Pinyin.In the areas of word segmentation, part of speech tagging, entity recognition, text classification, question answering system, Spam detection, sentiment analysis, the laboratory achieved good results in evaluations of National 863 program, ACE, TREC and SIGHAN.The laboratory has published more than 200 papers on influential journals and conferences in these areas, including Science China, Chinese Science Bulletin, Chinese Journal of Computers, IEEE Transaction, ACM Transaction, Bioinformatics, ACL, CIKM, MICAI, IJCNLP etc.The laboratory has undertaken one key project of the national natural science foundation, 3 key projects or goal oriented projects of national 863 program, more than 10 general projects of national natural science foundation and 3 international cooperation projects.

      Web Intelligent Lab now has 1 professor, 8 Ph.D candidates, 5 masters and 20 undergraduates. Researches in this lab covers medical/health informatics, natural language processing, web mining. Projects and achievements ever since 2007 include:

5) Reinforcement Learning Mechanism Based on Word Agent and Autonomous Learning for Computation of Semantic Similarity between Sentences, supported by NSFC China

6) Sentiment Analysis Based on System Similarity, supported by MOE-MS Key Lab of NLP&Speech

7) Chinese Shallow Parsing, supported by Alibaba

8) Sentiment Analysis for blog or BBS, supported by Fujitsu

9) Unconventional Emergency Management, supported by a key project of NSF China

10) Next Generation of Information Retrieval, member of this key project of NSF China

11) Chinese Morphological Analysis, supported by I2R of Singapore

Social Network Lab consists of 5 researchers engaging in natural language processing, network information retrieval and mining, social computing. In 2010, it was awarded the third prize of Science and Technology Progress of National Defense. The lab is now involved in the following research directions:

1) large-scale web search, covering such topics like the distributed web crawler, massive web indexing and retrieval. Projects completed include “Text Retrieval” supported by Fujitsu, Web Base Q&A supported by Tencent, Customer Service Q&A supported by China Mobile, E-mail Search Engine supported by 242 Program and Domain Specific Search Engines.

2) Personalized/Social search, covering such topics as user interests mining, user relationship detection and social network mining over Web2.0 and UGC (user generated content) data. Projects in this direction are featured by a key project of NSF China.

3) Social computing: focused on social network mining from micro blogs. A general project of NSF China was granted as Large-scale Social Network Analysis.
